Falcons lose close games to Ball State

Bowling Green State University volleyball played the MAC West-leading Ball State Cardinals on Friday at the Stroh Center.

Each of the three sets was settled by four runs or less in the match with Ball State picking up the win. The Falcons were led on the field by Jaden Walz who led the team in both assists (18) and digs (12) to record his ninth double-double of the season. As for offense, Lauryn Hovey recorded 16 kills for the Falcons.

The loss moves Bowling Green to 14-9 this season and 9-3 in the Mid-American Conference.

How did it happen

Set 1: Ball State 25, Bowling Green 21

The first set started back and forth with Ball State slowly building a lead before a Bowling Green timeout with the score at 11-6.

The point exchange continued between the Falcons and Cardinals until the next stoppage, via Bowling Green’s timeout.

The Falcons put up a 3-0 run later in the set to force Ball State to use a timeout with the score at 21-16 Cardinals.

Two more runs for the Falcons out of the timeout made the run 5-0 and prompted Ball State’s second timeout of the set with the score at 21-18.

The Falcons kept pushing through the set, but the Cardinals held on for a 25-21 first-set victory.

Set 2: Ball State 25, Bowling Green 23

The second set started tight with the tie going to 10-10 before a 3-0 run put the Falcons ahead 13-10 and forced a timeout from the Cardinal bench.

Bowling Green was able to hold the lead until the next stoppage. A 3-0 run for Ball State forced a Falcons timeout with BGSU leading 19-17.

Another 3-0 run for Ball State later in the set tied the score 21-21 with Bowling Green using their second timeout.

Ball State came out ahead 24-21, but the Falcons had two runs to make it 24-23 and force a timeout for the Cardinals.

Ball State recorded the next point out of timeout to win the second set 25-23.

Set 3: Ball State 25, Bowling Green 22

The Falcons used a 3-0 run to take a 14-12 lead before Ball State tied it at 14-14. A service error for the Cardinals gave BGSU a 15-14 lead in the media timeout.

Ball State recorded the next three timeout points to take a 17-15 lead and force a Falcon timeout.

A late-set 4-1 streak gave Ball State a 22-20 lead with Bowling Green calling the timeout.

The Cardinals managed to hold on to a 25-22 set victory to win the game 3-0.

Falcon Stats Facts

Jaden Walz notched his ninth team-leading double-double of the season, leading the team in both assists (18) and digs (12). The double-double is the 24th by a Falcon this season.

Hovey led the Falcons offense with 16 kills, close to matching his career high.

Indrova made 35 attacking attempts on the night, bringing his career total to 3,373 to rank ninth on the all-time career attacking attempt list. Indrova passed Danielle Tonyan who recorded 3,354 from 2010-13. Indrova finished the night with eight kills and 11 digs.

Andrews led the Falcons to the net with five total blocks. Andrews recorded a solo block with four assists.

The Falcons will return to the Stroh Center on Saturday for the Battle of I-75. The match is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. with spins or treats in the lobby starting at 3 p.m. as part of the Voll-oween theme. There will also be autographs after the game, as the game is also the Meserve Cup.
